Referee bias in professional sports

One possible reason why teams in most professional sports leagues have a home field advantage (i.e. are more likely to win when playing at home) is due to referee bias in favor of the home team. Examining German professional soccer, Dohmen (2008) finds that referee bias in favour of the home team exists and interacts in interesting ways with the size, composition, and physical proximity of the crowd. What do Dohmem’s results suggest about referee incentives? What measures could leagues take to reduce referee bias in favour of home teams? On the other side of the issue, what measures might teams take to ensure referee bias works in their favour while playing at home? (TOPIC #2)
