is there tension between the exercise of scientific, technological, and/or medical expertise and democratic deliberation and decision-making? If so, why? If not, why not?

fQuestion #1
As we have come to understand over the course of our class, a central aim of feminist science and technology studies involves persistently posing the questions: what counts as objective knowledge, who or what decides this, and on what basis is knowledge taken to be legitimate or authoritative? In particular, we’ve explored the relationships between various conceptualizations of expertise and the relationships of expertise to power, privilege, and the possibility of equity, justice, freedom, and democracy.
To your estimation, is there tension between the exercise of scientific, technological, and/or medical expertise and democratic deliberation and decision-making?
If so, why? If not, why not?
Please be sure to specify how you understand or define the concept of expertise.
Please discuss a minimum of three distinct examples from our course materials that speak to your answer. Any and all course materials are fair game for use in responses.
Question #2
Consider the various aspects of science, technology, medicine, and society that we have discussed during the past sixteen weeks, especially as they relate to questions of gender, sex, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status/social class. Consider what you have found most inspiring or promising and what you have found most limiting or problematic as regards the historical and ongoing relationships between science and society.
Please take some time to seriously consider what the relationships between science, technology, medicine, and society could or should be like now and going forward into the short and/or long-term future. .
Please reflect on how the ideas, beliefs, practices, and values pertaining to the relationships between science and society could be – from your perspective – made better going forward. Can the intersections of science, technology, medicine, and society be different? Better? How?
