Visual Analysis PowerPoint Project

One of the more traditional assignments that students encounter in an Art History class is to go to a museum and/or gallery to observe an object(s) and write a paper that details its stylistic features. Due to the public health restrictions necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic, the public viewing spaces of museums have been closed to the public. Accordingly, the subject of this Visual Analysis PowerPoint project will evolve from a virtual visit to a local museum (e.g., Frost Art Museum/FIU, Institute of Contemporary Art (Miami Design District), NoMi MoCA, PAMM, Wolfsonian, NSU/Ft. Lauderdale), private collection (e.g., Margulies, Rubel), and/or galleries in South Florida that focus on contemporary art.

The main objective of this assignment is to select an object and compare its stylistic elements to works we have discussed in class. Describe it, and then compare/contrast it to pieces we have studied in class, whether in the PowerPoint lectures or in the textbook. When selecting objects to compare, be discerning, by selecting objects that share more characteristics than not. The aim of this assignment is for students to develop an eye for style and to locate the subtle differences that distinguish one technique or tendency from another.
As such, the Visual Analysis PowerPoint project should contain a written description of the object (bulleted or paragraph format), along with comparison slides that contain verbally recorded analysis, as well as a conclusion slide with comments about why this is a significant object. Remember, this is NOT a research project. However, if you quote a source (e.g., a placard from the museum/gallery or web site), be sure to cite it. This PowerPoint project should be fifteen to twenty (15-20) slides, including an Image Index at the end that serves as a “works cited” or bibliography that cites the collection, artist, title, date, size, medium, et cetera. Submit the Visual Analysis PowerPoint Project by uploading it to the assignment dropbox in Canvas.
