instructions from teacher:
How does one review a book? YOU read the book, and YOU write the
review. DO NOT use any source other than
the book being reviewed. DO NOT write
about what other people have had to say about the book.
Unlike a “book report,” which is simply a description of
the events and characters in a book, in a book review, you are expected to show
that you understand why the author wrote the book, and to comment on whether or
not the author achieved his/her goals in the book (strengths/weaknesses). See the WebStudy Syllabus Timeline to see
3
sample book review.
Your review should be a MINIMUM of 1000 words of
text PLUS a cover page with your name and class information, and broken down as
follows:
1)
reviewing.
List the Bibliographic reference for the book you are
?
Bibliographic reference must be properly
formatted in the MLA style. Unlike a
research paper, where the bibliography is in the back, this reference belongs
ON THE COVER PAGE, with your name and class information. Also, list the number
of names in the Book
2)
List the Library of Congress Classification (AKA Call
Number) for the book you are reviewing.
This also belongs on the cover page.
Use these headings for the next
three sections of your paper: Author’s Main Points; Abstract; Strengths and
Weaknesses. Download an MS Word template
for book reviews from the WebStudy Syllabus Timeline.
3)
In the text of your paper, discuss the thesis, hypotheses or
problem statement presented in the book (one to two paragraphs).
Basically, this means discussing the MAIN
POINTS that the author is attempting to make. Very few authors write a simple narrative
history of an event or of a person’s life.
They will usually have something specific that they are trying to get
across about the event/person.
4)
Provide a brief summary (abstract) of the book that
addresses the major points that the author makes throughout the book (two to
four pages).
“This part of a book review IS
hisimilar to a “book report.”
5)
(one to two paragraphs).
Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the work as a whole
Tell your reader how well the author made
his/her point, and discuss any weaknesses in the author’s argument, style,
presentation, etc.
