-Having developed an understanding of the major criminological theories of crime causation and the arguments and key ideas of key theorists in the discipline of Criminology.
-Being able to problematize these theories and develop an understanding of how they would be applied to a current news story concerning crime or crime control.
– Successful students will give evidence of having developed a capacity to:
– Recognize and discuss key criminological concepts and the theoretical traditions with which they are an ociated
-Identify and summarise key debates and arguments
– Assess the merits of competing for criminological explanations
– Develop reasoned arguments and communicate them effectively in writing.
A 1,500 word essay which explores a particular theory in relation to a current news story concerning crime or crime control.
Very simply you need to:
a. Select a relatively recent news story that concerns an issue of crime or crime control.
b. Provide a brief overview of what the news story is about.
c. Provide an analysis/interpretation of the news story (how you make ‘sense’ of it) by applying ONE or at most TWO explanatory perspectives (theories) addressed on this module. For example: you might assess the social/media/political responses to the murder of David Amess MP through the lens of Durkheimian notions of ‘functional’ crime.
The purpose of the assessment if for you to demonstrate a knowledge of relevant criminological theory through applying it to a specific example (news story)
