You should structure the paper such that you have an introduction, an overview of each theory, a synthesis of your findings regarding use of the theories in nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing research, and, finally, your argument supporting the theory or theoretical framework that you propose as a strong contender to unify the discipline and guide the practice of nursing. A strong conclusion should synthesize the key findings of the paper.
The purpose of this paper is to closely examine three nursing theories of your choice and identify one, or some combination of the theories that is best suited to guide nursing practice. What would be different within the health system if all nurses used a similar nursing theory or theoretical framework to guide their nursing practice?
Develop a scholarly paper, due at the end of the term, which includes an analysis of the three theories.
Provide an overview of the essence and type (e.g., grand or middle range) of each theory. Indicate its origins, including theoretical, philosophical, and paradigmatic underpinnings. For paradigm, consider its coherence with any of the various classifications as identified by Fawcett (1993).
Search recent nursing literature (from 2000 to present only) to determine support for the three theories in each of the following areas:
Nursing education – Is there evidence that the theory is currently being used as a framework for undergraduate or graduate nursing education? For instance, is it being used to guide any aspect of nursing curricula or curricular philosophy in nursing schools? Or, is it being offered as a specific course?
Nursing practice – Is there evidence that the theory is currently being used as a framework to guide nursing practice? For instance, is it being used by institutions or nursing departments as the theoretical underpinning for nursing care? Is it being used by individual nurses to guide their nursing practice?
Nursing research – Is there evidence that the theory (or aspects of the theory) is currently being used as a guide or framework for nursing research? How many studies for each theory did you find? Are they qualitative or quantitative in methodology? What aspects of the theory were examined? What topics were covered? What are the relevant findings and do the findings support the theory?
On the basis of the nature of each theory and evidence in the literature regarding its use, defend one (or a combination) of the theories as best suited to unify and guide nursing practice.
