Final exam prompt: Let’s be optimists!
Your professor can be such a huge bummer. We have devoted much of this semester to discussing big, complicated issues in the field of strategic political communication, going into great detail about why, across a range of issues, things are even worse than they seem.
For your final exam, let’s choose to be optimists instead. Pick an area of American politics where things seem bad, or headed in a bad direction right now. Get into the complexity of it. But then discuss what you think could/should/might happen that will lead the situation to improve. What is it that skilled strategic political communicators will one day do to make things better in your topic area?
Your answer should draw upon the readings from this semester, and should also be anchored in concrete examples. Fundamentally, I am asking you to reflect on what strategic communication can do, what it can’t do, and how systems change over time.
The purpose of this question is to give you an opportunity to apply the concepts from this semester to a broad question. There is no single right answer. I will be evaluating you based upon mastery of the course materials, creativity, and sophistication of your thinking.
Your final paper should be 10-12 pages in length (double-spaced).
