Analyze a case of politically-motivated hacking in terms of the hacktivism vs. cyberterrorism debate.

You will need to do the following:
1) Choose a particular case that raises an issue relating to cyberethics.
2) Determine which framework or concepts are most relevant for analyzing this
case. (These must be framework/concepts we have covered in this course, which is
included in the list below.)
3) Offer a thoughtful application of the framework/concepts to the case, which
includes providing arguments and analysis to explain how the framework/concepts
applies to the fact of the case.
4) Draw a conclusion about what the ethically correct action in the case would be,
and whether the actual actors in the case fulfilled this obligation or failed to act
correctly.
5) Finally, explain which ethical theory or theories (deontology, utilitarianism, or
both) best justifies your conclusion and why.

Choosing a Case

When choosing a case, it is important to consider which framework/concepts you
will use. Some frameworks/concepts are more complex than others. For example,
cybersecurity ethics involves a balancing of adequately secure computer systems
with the autonomy and privacy of computer users. While you might be able to
construct a perfectly good presentation and paper using this framework, it does not
have as much theoretical depth as, say, privacy theory. The more theoretical depth a
framework/concept has, the easier it will be to offer a rich and extensive analysis of
the case, which is a good thing. Since you need to develop a presentation and paper
of an appropriate length, you want to make sure that you choose a framework and
case that allows for a sufficient amount of analysis and argumentation.
Here are a few examples:
– Analyze a whistleblower case in light of DeGeorge’s framework and other concepts
(e.g. loyalty) that are relevant to whistleblowing.
– Analyze a case of politically-motivated hacking in terms of the hacktivism vs.
cyberterrorism debate.
The topic is left fairly general because I want to provide the freedom to work on a
case that genuinely interests you. Therefore, I let you choose both the case that you
will analyze, and the framework/concept (from the list above) that you will use to
analyze the case.
