Autoethnography is a form or method of research that involves self-observation and reflexive investigation. For this assignment, you will write a brief, well-organized personal essay around 1000 in which you give an autobiographical account of your perspectives on and experiences with religion and religious difference.
What does religious difference look like to you? Difference is always determined in relation to whatever is normative or typical for you. So you will need to account for this and include elements of autobiography, in which you give a narrative account of meaningful events in your life where you have encountered religion or religious difference. You might discuss your family’s religion(s), your own religious identity and/or beliefs, religions you have explored or encountered through conversion, study, travel, or relationships with friends, family or significant others, or questions you have about religions. Think about religion in terms of belief, behaviors, and belonging. Consider how social identities and relationships, such family, race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexuality, culture, and more, have shaped your experiences of religion and religious difference.
Through recounting and analyzing your experiences of religion, you will consider the perspectives and assumptions that form your interpretive lens. You do not need to use outside sources for this essay.
