Research Proposal Format
APA format (7th edition) will be used for the proposal except for the following modifications:
1) The Introduction and Methods section will be at least 10 double-spaced pages (not including References).
2) The Introduction section must contain citations that refer to at least 10 references.
3) There will be no Results or Discussion sections.
4) You must include an Abstract after the title page.
5) Write the Method section in the future tense to reflect a proposal.
6) Tables and Figures (optional) may be included after the References
7) The Introduction should contain the following sections (include as headings)
a) Statement of the problem
i) What is the problem that you intend to investigate?
b) Significance of the problem
i) Why is the problem important?
ii) Theoretical significance
iii) Practical importance
c) Background literature
i) What have other investigators reported in this area?
d) Contribution of the present study
i) How will your study go beyond or build upon prior studies?
ii) How is your study original?
e) Purpose of the study
i) Experimental question(s) OR hypotheses
8) The Method should contain the following sections (include as headings)
a) Participants
i) How many; any special characteristics?
ii) Where will you recruit them?
iii) Human subjects issues and procedure
b) Experimental Design
i) Betweens-subjects design OR within-subjects design?
ii) IV’s and Design – Number of groups and cells (ex. 2x2x3)
iii) Identify appropriate control procedures to eliminate possible confounds and ensure high internal validity?
c) Measures
i) DV’s
ii) Questionnaires; tasks
d) Materials
i) What will you need to carry out the project?
e) Procedures
i) What will you do and in what order?
