The major assignment for this class is a research design paper on a political science or geography topic of your choice. As I have mentioned, your paper should be focused on a research question, NOT just a topic. This means your paper should begin with a statement that ends with a question mark. The paper should be organized around an argument that addresses that question.
The paper should be approximately 5 single-spaced pages (not including a list of references). It should consist of an abstract, an introduction, a literature review, a theory / argument, a research design section, and a brief conclusion. Your paper should have a cover page (not included in the 5 pages) that features (1) a title for the paper, (2) an abstract, and (3) your name, along with the name/year of our class (POLS 308 / GEOG 308, Fall 2021). Please use in-text citations in the author-date-page format (e.g., DiLorenzo 2019, 10). Use footnotes for clarifying comments / asides. Please do not use endnotes.
There are many different research designs you could propose based on the methods we have covered in the class. In general, you might think of proposing a comparative case study, a lab/survey/field experiment, or an analysis centered on the statistical analysis of quantitative data. If you aren’t sure where to start for your question, it may be helpful to think of observable implications of your theory that could be measured in a survey, though you are not required to proposed a survey-based research design.
The question is:
Does LGBTQ+ sexual orientation affect income in the United States? On the individual level the scales are unbalanced when it comes to income levels for men and women. For example, a gay couple of two men is more likely to have a higher income then a heterosexual, lesbian etc. couple. What kind of long-term effects would please income inequalities have on our society.
