Part 1 – Focus Questions (40 points each)

Part 2 – Essay (130 points)
Essay will be graded on organization (introduction, thesis, each topic developed in order, conclusio) as well as content (sufficient details/examples to illustrate each topic; thorough analysis).
This semester, we have seen the power of visual sources in helping us to address and understand historical themes.
Your assignment is to write a well-developed essay exploring how each of the following videos delves into themes of courage, endurance, and sense of community:
Week 12 Topics and Assigned Readings page – Monticello Voices video (regarding slaves at Jefferson’s estate of Monticello)
Week 13 Topics and Assigned Readings page – 2 videos regarding the Trail of Tears
Weeks 14-15 Topics and Assigned Readings page – video on Harriet Beecher Stowe OR video on Clara Barton
A reminder that it’s always a good idea to imagine you’re writing for someone who doesn’t know anything about the topics at hand; this will help your writing to be clear, detailed, and substantive.
Your essay should be a full three pages – one-inch margins, 12-point font, double-spaced.
As with any essay, you will need an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
All sources used for the exam should be properly cited. Whenever you quote directly from one of the sources, immediately provide a brief citation in parentheses – for example: (Foner, p. 135). At the end of your exam, provide a complete citation for each source used, including titles (or URLs) for the videos. Only sources provided in class should be used for your exam.
