Part One
Part of what informs the basis of producing great scholarship comes at first posing a great question. This assignment is designed to help you think through the process of forming one of the most vital components of a proposal that will, in turn, become the point of exploration in your final research paper. The question must be a thematically relevant question to any of the topics covered in the class. Consult with the syllabus for various topics that are pertinent to the themes explored in the course. Once you form a question based on your area of interest, your proposal should answer the following questions in 2 pages:
1. What are you researching?
2. Why are you proposing this research?
3. What material will you refer to?
a. Provide an annotated bibliography with at least 5 sources (academic resources only) and one sentence explaining why this source makes sense for your topic of interest.
Part Two
The final paper (8 pages) addresses the proposed topic from the research proposal exercise. You may change the topic you choose to address in the final essay. However, changes must be approved in advance by November 1, 2021 (contact TA). The topic should be thoroughly researched. A successful paper draws on the readings in class while positioning historical and contemporary sources alongside (or against) its thesis for constructive analysis. Further, the final paper should be cohesive, well organized, and grammatically sound.
8-10 pages, double spaced.
Font size: 12; Margins: 1” on all sides.
Citation style of your choice, but be consistent.
Works cited can utilize class readings in addition to sources found outside of class materials.
Q#1 What does a successful paper look like?
A successful paper is able to balance drawing on the themes and readings we’ve discussed in the class while also showcasing your own interests. We’re looking for a strong and clear thesis statement. What is your argument, and how will you prove it? And following that, is your logic easy to follow with regard to how you prove your thesis through the paper. A successful paper can utilize grammar and style appropriately. And, a great paper strategically engages with a breadth of sources. Lastly, we’re interested in your analysis, not your descriptive ability :]
Q#2 What kind of sources can we use?
Academic sources. There are very few exceptions to this rule. If you have any doubts, please ask.
