TOPIC:
Love Medicine is a novel about storytelling. For example, when discussing the recently deceased June Kashpaw, Zelda states, “she had seen a few hard times, and these bruises . ..” (Erdrich 12). To which Zelda’s sister Aurelia retorts, “Wasn’t either. You never saw her. . . Nobody knows for sure what happened, so who’s to squawk about bruises and so on . . . nobody saw her” (12-13). Aurelia concludes, “Don’t trust nothing you don’t see with your own eyes” (13). Against this logic that we only know things if we directly experience them, how does this novel explore the importance and politics of stories? How do stories become the mode through which we know and understand the world and other people? How does Erdrich explore the complexities and contradictions of stories? In answering this question, center on 1-3 characters.
DIRECTIONS:
Write a paper that responds to one of the following prompts. No matter which prompt you choose, please include at least three stories/chapters.
Regardless of which prompt you choose, in the paper’s first sentence, introduce the author, the text (remember book names are italicized), and the date it’s published. From there, describe the novel’s form—its interconnected stories—and summarize the parts for the novel that are most important for your specific analysis. Conclude your introductory paragraph with your central claim.

-Every paragraph must contain at least two examples of integrated and contextualized evidence from the readings.
