Course Behavior: Getting Tested For HIV among Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) In South Africa
Each student will design a theory-informed health behavior intervention for his/her “course behavior” and present it to their classmates. You will find your causal loop diagram very useful in completing this assignment.
Purpose: Social and behavioral health theories can help program managers understand why their target population is engaging or not engaging in health behavior and, in turn, identify points of intervention. In this assignment, students will practice applying theory to the design of a health intervention.
Please include the following information in your presentation:
1. Introduce the health outcome that your intervention aims to improve. Provide general background information about the health outcome and give key epidemiological facts describing the health outcome (ie: prevalence, incidence, rates, etc) (1 – 2 slides).
2. Identify the population that your intervention will target and their geographic location. Provide your rationale for selecting this population. The only guideline that you have for this section is that the geographic location of the intervention should be in a low- or middle-income country OR the target audience should be a refugee or immigrant community in a high-income country (1 slide).
3. Describe the environmental and behavioral causes of your health outcome. Indicate which health behavior (behavioral cause) your intervention will seek to address (1 slide).
4. Select a theory that we discussed in class that can help you understand your health behavior. Provide your rationale for selecting this theory (1 slide).
5. Apply the theory to your health behavior and specific target population. Discuss each construct for the theory that you selected as it relates to your health behavior. State which constructs (s) of the theory your intervention will address (1 – 2 slides).
6. Describe your intervention. Indicate which theory or theories helped inform the design of your intervention. This may or may not be the same theory that you selected in item #4 (2 – 3 slides).
7. Indicate where or how the proposed intervention fits in the ecological framework. What level or levels of the ecological model does your intervention target (1 slide)?
8. Describe how you will involve the community in the planning and implementation of your intervention (1 slide).
9. Include a conclusion/final slide to wrap up your presentation (1 slide).
10. You will need to consult outside resources and peer-reviewed literature to complete this assignment thus please include a slide that lists the references used for your presentation (1 slide).
