In 1000-1250 words (about 5 – 6 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1” margins), develop an analytic essay which may be used as liner notes for an “audio anthology.” The focus of the anthology should be a specific American popular music genre, or sub-genre, between the years of 1945 and 2015 (i.e. Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock or Country, Folk Music, Bebop, Electronic Dance Music, Surf Music, Bluegrass, Disco, Punk Music, etc.). It is up to you to determine a satisfactory “theme” for the anthology. Instructor approval of the proposed genre or sub-genre is required.
The essay should define the genre, include cultural influences on or by the genre, and justification of such an anthology based on evidence and historical significance. Frame the genre within the larger context of American culture and musical events of the time. A few questions which may be of assistance to focus the narrative —
What was happening in the nation directly preceding and during the time in question? How did events of the time in U.S. history relate to the musical genre chosen?
How does the focus of the anthology reflect cultural events in the country or musical significance?
Who were important figures in the “movement” or genre and how did the individuals influence the genre’s development?
What is the significance of the genre and why is it important/significant within U.S. history or American Popular Music?
In addition to the essay, and in the style of an annotated bibliography, create an annotated track list of between six to ten songs (around 40-45 minutes of music) to be released on a CD. Write a few brief sentences to annotate each selection and justify its inclusion on the audio recording. Indicate:
Performer, “Song Title,” Album, year of release, duration of song – (NOTICE FORMAT)
(Include a few sentences to justify this selection place in the anthology.)
Format:
Center Title (in bold); FName LName; MUSC 213-XX (section #); Each line single-spaced
Insert double-spaced paragraph and begin with body of the paper.

Begin Track List on a new page and nest/indent annotations (refer to example above).
Include bibliography on a new page at the end of the paper (enter page break; Ctrl+Enter). A minimum of four academic sources should be referenced. Popular websites and the course text may be utilized, but will not be counted toward reference requirement.
