Introduction
Identify a global sustainability issue (using SDG or planetary boundary framing, or both). Provide a figure or table that describes the magnitude of the global sustainability issue.
How can it be addressed locally through new initiatives of a sustainable, resilient city?
What initiative would you propose? Why? What outcomes are anticipated? How does you anticipate it could be Innovative? Achievable? Transformative?
Background Research on Proposed Initiative
What other cities have implemented a similar initiative (undergrads – consider a minimum of 3 plans; grad students consider a minimum of 5 plans)? What outcomes were anticipated and achieved? How was success measured? What can be learned? If not successful, why not? What sorts of barriers may exist to limit success?
What best practices did you discover among city plans and initiatives?
Through exemplary integration of economy, equity and environment? How?
Through exemplary integration distributional, procedural and process equity? How?
Through exemplary integration resilience principles? How?
In other cities, what financial resources were made available for development of their initiatives and implementation of those initiatives?
How was a diversity of voices/stakeholders involved in the development, governance and decision-making regarding the initiative?
Were historical inequities addressed? How could equity and justice considerations be more robust and impactful?
What data will you synthesize to support why the initiative you propose will be impactful and have the outcomes you anticipate? Give examples of the types of data you will compile. What will it tell us?
A New City Initiative to Build a Sustainable, Resilient South Florida
What observations do you have about a neighborhood or city in Miami Dade or other area of South Florida that can be improved through a new initiative of a sustainable resilient city? Provide a map of the location. Considering class lectures and readings, provide a more in depth set of observations e.g., include observations about multiple city systems, provide the city-region context, etc.
How does your initiative integrate economy, equity and environment?
How will distributional, procedural and process equity be incorporated?
How will principles of resilience incorporated?
What are the societal outcomes and quantitative targets for success? Why (based on what? e.g., Miami-Dade County Climate Action plan, Biden’s 2050 net-zero commitment)? When would be targets be achieved? How? What tangible, actionable steps need to be taken? How will you measure progress? When will it be reported? To whom? How frequently?
If the targets are reached, what impact could they have? At the City, State, US and/or global level? What are the potential co-benefits or unintended consequences?
Discussion
Discuss what you learned from your research. How does the literature support (or not support) your conclusions? What would you recommend to a city attempting to initiate a new city initiative? What other considerations might you add? Close your discussion section by adding some concluding remarks.
