We know from the research literature that our prior school experiences as a student (a.k.a. our apprenticeship of observation – Lortie, 1974) wield incredible influence on our views of teaching and learning. Therefore, it is essential that we explore our P-12 school experiences so that each of us is aware of the pre-existing perceptions and educational ghosts that we bring to our pedagogical practices. This is your personal educational lineage. For this assignment, you will record a screencast of yourself reflecting on your educational lineage. It should be an introspective summary/reflection on your memories of learning across your educational experiences (Elementary School-Middle School-High School) AND conclude with what you hope to accomplish as a teacher in the future.
Questions to guide your introspection and reflection can include:
When was a time that you felt empowered and affirmed as an individual or as a learner by an educator (e.g., teacher, coach, advisor, staff member, principal, professor, etc.)? Why do you believe you felt the way you did? What did that person see/do that others did not?
What strengths and strategies have you employed to be successful in your educational experience? What challenges have you encountered in your educational experience? Why do you think you encountered them?
When was a time that you felt unseen/misunderstood/overlooked as an individual or as a learner by an educator (e.g., teacher, coach, advisor, staff member, principal, professor, etc.)? Why do you believe that occurred?
Where do you currently see yourself, and your philosophical, theoretical, cultural, or social stance, as an individual and future educator?
Which theories, theorists, philosophies, and philosophers do you feel most aligned with as an educator? Why do you feel that way?
Your discussion of your current viewpoints and positions should also include the following:
the Social Foundations- This aspect of educational foundations examines issues, policies, and influences of the social aspects of the institution of education. Based on the readings and discussions throughout the course, you are to delve deeper into and share your viewpoints on the broad, complex, complicated, and at times, contested interrelationships between the social organization of school and society – education.
the Philosophical Foundations-This aspect of educational foundations focuses on the grounding philosophies, or set of beliefs that influence what, why, and how information is shared and taught. What knowledge is of most worth (Herbert Spencer, 1859) and who decides? Philosophical Foundations grapples with issues centered around the purpose of school, the role of the teacher, who should have access, what should be taught, and by what method – all grounded in one or more philosophical positions.
the Cultural Foundations – This aspect of educational foundations explores the cultural vein of our institution of education – issues of social justice and democratic existence as related to schooling, education, educational policy and cultural democracy. Education will be examined as the overlapping site for hierarchies of race, gender, class, religion, and sexual preferences intersecting with cultural and political forces, values and belief systems.
I recommend you use Screencast-o-matic.com to create your screencast for free, but you are welcome to use any screencasting software of your choice (as long as I can open and view your screencast without downloading any unusual software). You must create PowerPoint slides (or something similar like Prezi…this is your chance to demonstrate your creativity and technical prowess!) to serve as the visual focal point of your presentation. Your screencast must be between 7-10 minutes in length. You will upload or link to the screencast in the corresponding Canvas location.
