Reflection Questions Part 1 – Mercy Integrative Seminar
Before answering these questions, please read the three attachments. “Mercy Ministries Respond to the Cry of the Earth” describes a number of initiatives currently being undertaken around the world in response to the Critical Concern for the Earth: by Sisters of Mercy, by kindergartners, by high school students, from very small projects to large-scale advocacy programs. “Earth Community and Mercy Consciousness” dives into some of the theoretical/theological ideas behind these action. The worksheet shows the interconnectedness of the five Critical Concerns.
1) A recent article in the Annals of Global Health states: “The environmental and health consequences of climate change, which disproportionately affect low-income countries and poor people in high-income countries, profoundly affect human rights and social justice.” (Barry Levy and Jonathan Patz, Annals of Global Health, Volume 81, Issue 3, May–June 2015, pages 310-322). What implications does this idea have for you in your proposed profession? Be as specific as you can.
2) Pope Francis says, “there is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions”? What connections can you make between the two articles and your proposed profession?
3) Which example shared from the “Mercy Ministries” article most inspires you? Why? What first step could you take to explore implementing that effort in your life? What support would you need to implement that new action? That is, what infrastructure would need to be in place in order for you to get that action started? What barriers do you see that would prevent or hinder you from taking that action?
