Essay instructions:
Compose an essay that answers the set of questions asked and demonstrates that you are familiar with assigned texts, lecture
materials, and topics discussed in class.
Questions to Respond to:
What does Murray Shanahan mean by the singularity? How is it defined, what happens when we get to that singularity,
and how likely are we to reach that point? Shanahan focuses on the technological aspects of reaching this goal via artificial
intelligence (AI), and sketches out two general pathways toward achieving it. Summarize these two approaches. It was
suggested in lectures that there may also be other pathways leading to a similar singularity through what is referred to as
artificial life (ALife). What is that all about and how might ALife lead to a blending of what is technological with the
biological? As suggested, most of our life is “artificial” anyway, so can it really get any worse? Can the processes leading to
AI and/or ALife be stopped or even slowed down? Should they be? In answering, consider the problems encountered by
society in the 21st century, including (but not limited to) consumerism, the loss of privacy, and climate change. In these
pandemic times, what about issues related to disease and mortality?
Murray Shanahan says, “The hope is that artificial intelligence, far from destroying us, will help us realize our boldest
aspirations while pursuing our highest ideals” (p. 226). Presumably, those ideals include saving humankind. Summarize and
critically analyze the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), what research directions are being pursued to develop it, what
plans there are for AI in the future and why it is needed to begin with. Is AI dangerous? As discussed in lectures, there is
plenty of AI around us, but think in particular about the uses and possibilities given what McKenzie Wark says about the
“vectoralist” world we now live in. More broadly, thinking back on our discussions and thinking ahead toward the future, do
technologies help us, hurt us, both, or are they neutral? Discuss this, for example, in light of technologies that create a
surveillant society, how technologies have led to climatic change, and so on. Throughout the course, the concept of a
“technological fix” has been discussed. Can AI provide a fix to remedy the problems that other technologies have already
created? What does Shanahan think and what do you think?
Assignment Criteria:
Three criteria will be used in grading these essays, which will be worth a total of 50 points: (1) Familiarity with the materials presented (worth 20 points). The essay needs to demonstrate that you are acquainted with readings and lecture topics. In other words, you need to prove that you’ve done the work. It is not important that every point and textual nuance be perfectly understood, but some evidence has to be given that these questions have been encountered and contemplated. (2) Comprehension of materials presented (20 points). Again, there is no single correct way of interpretation, but this does not mean that every interpretation is as good as the next. Do you understand what has been presented, and, just as importantly, how effectively are you able to make the connections between concepts and themes that may not always seem to fit together in some immediately obvious form? (3) Clarity of ideas presented in the essay (10 points). How effectively and precisely are you saying what you want to say? How does the essay flow? Remember that excessive mistakes in spelling, punctuation, syntax, and so on, may disrupt clarity of the essay.
In addition to these familiar criteria, this essay will be evaluated on how effectively it integrates themes, concepts, and arguments presented throughout this course. This does not mean that you have to go back and review each of the books we have read; however, reserve at least some space to discuss what the future holds, how it has been envisioned throughout the course, and what, if anything, can be done to alter this future. What themes bind together everything that has been discussed, from endo-colonization to control of information to global warming to GMOs? As always, you may disagree with the arguments presented in the course materials, but these disagreements need to be presented in the context of a critique that specifically addresses these materials. You may not ignore them.
