Goals: Classroom knowledge would be incomplete without a connection to Indigenous communities. While this class prioritizes Indigenous perspectives in its class materials and lectures, it also reaches out to the Indigenous leaders, knowledge-keepers, and activists in our immediate region and beyond in order to learn first-hand from an even greater variety of teachers. In that regard, this assignment meets all of our course objectives: 1) witness the ongoing and diverse history of Native peoples in a local and potentially global context, 2) reflect on Indigenous perspectives and cultural understandings, 3) identify ongoing Indigenous issues at the regional, national, and international level, including the concept of and struggles over sovereignty and land rights, and 4) critically evaluate sources of knowledge about Indigenous peoples and histories.
Assignment Description: Attend or participate in an Indigenous-related community event or activity. A list of suggested events and dates are provided below, but if you know of an event or activity not listed here that you would like to attend (in your home Indigenous community, for example), please reach out. We ask that you join the event as a respectful listener and a learner, paying close attention to the perspectives being represented, the values being expressed, and the power dynamics and agency at play.
After the event, we ask you thoughtfully reflect on your experience. Some prompts you may or may not consider: What were the goals of the event? How did the organizers, leaders, and participants work together to accomplish those goals? Whose perspectives were represented? How did the event create a feeling of community? How did the event match our course objectives, or the general education learning objectives? How did one or more of our class readings, resources, lectures, or conversation give you better insight into the event? How did the event connect to some of our course themes? What did you learn from the event? What is the history of the event (if applicable), and how does it speak to an ongoing topic? Be as specific as possible, including specific descriptions of the event and details of what you learned or observed.
