Strive for readability and correct grammar. Here are some tips: Strive for a “matter of fact” style. Usually, the simplest way to state something is the best. Avoid “flowery” language. For these papers, you are describing an event in the past. Keep your tense consistent – all verbs should be in past tense. (Some exceptions here, but not many!) Eliminate passive voice from your writing: o Bad: “The guitar was played by John.” o Good: “John played the guitar.” Use commas for parenthetical phrases – i.e. “John, the amazing guitarist, used motivic development in his solo.” Song titles are capitalized and set in quotes: i.e. “The Girl from Ipanema.”Punctuation is usually INSIDE quotes – see last three points.
