Write an essay on “How does the media affect children’s attitudes?”

Your research paper may be on a topic of your choosing. However, since in this class we think outside the box and beyond convention, I expect for your topic to go beyond overwritten subjects like abortion, euthanasia, legalizing marijuana, the death penalty, etc. Challenge yourself with a topic you’ve always been interested in. Furthermore, your research paper should be focused and seek to answer a research question. If your topic is too broad, you can easily overwhelm yourself with loosely related information. If your topic is too narrow, you risk writing a short essay.
For example, the subject of “Child Development” is far too broad for a research paper. However, the research question, “How does the media affect children’s attitudes?” is much better and will give your actual research much more direction.
If you are struggling to find a research subject, you may write about the impact (psychological, social, etc) of a particular discourse community that you participate in. A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. Linguist John Swales defined discourse communities as “groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals.” For example, a biker gang, an athletic club, people who do jiu-jitsu or workout at the gym together, Dodger fans, English teachers at your college are all different kinds of discourse communities.
You must use a minimum of 4 peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles and one book. You may use additional sources if you’d like. Remember that in addition to summarizing claims, your research paper should provide clear examples of those claims, and establish the credibility of the sources you’re working from. Also, it never hurts to acknowledge alternative points of view, or counterpoints to your paper’s claim, or to include statistics for support. Be sure to keep track of your sources as you go and include a works cited page.
If your paper does not follow proper MLA guidelines, you will lose easy points. If you do not include a works cited page, you will lose easy points.
To get started, you should consider what you are interested in studying and start creating a comprehensive outline of your assignment plans including a research question, working thesis statement, outline of the order of your ideas, and list of potential sources you’ll be referencing in your paper. This is to ensure you are using your time wisely and not waiting until the last minute to start your paper.Remember that an outline is a blueprint for your success.

And the citation page does not count as a page!
