Some notes:
In the Radigue, focus your attention on the very slow evolution of the sound, and try to slow down your listening awareness to the pacing of this music. Note that most of the sound is sustained and continuous, but listen for the rare occurrences of discrete sounds or short, separated sound events.
In the La Monte Young selection, listen to at least ONE FULL HOUR from any part of the posted recording. You will note that the piano is tuned very differently from our accustomed system of pitches. Pay attention to the effect that this tuning has on both the performer and the listener. Since the performer is the composer, and since he is improvising within a set structure much like a jazz musician, ask yourself how the tuning exercises an influence on the performance, in terms of pacing and timing, rhythmic patterns, register, speed of articulation, loudness, and anything else you can identify.
In the Riley, be aware that this is a solo performance with a “phantom band”, and that there must be specific technical interventions allowing Riley to create the texture of multiple parts. Listen for any unusual or unexpected moments that stand out to you. You may want to speculate on what Riley is doing in live performance (since this is a live concert recording) to create this experience.
You should write approximately 1000 – 1200 words on each of the two pieces.
