Assignment: Write a 2,000-2,500 word research paper that expands significantly on either your first or second writing project.
Grading Criteria: A successful paper will demonstrate mastery of following elements:
A well-written introduction that follows the guidelines for MLA or APA style papers.
A solid thesis statement that guides the entire paper.
MLA Project Expansion: Your thesis should make a claim or argument about how two different films, songs, TV shows, or works of literature depict a specific social issue or norm.
APA Project Expansion: Your thesis will make state the topic (question or problem) and will assert a claim or argument about your proposed answer or solution.
Focused body paragraphs that explore the topic in depth. (Each body paragraph should have an effective topic sentence.)
Effective organization of your ideas in each paragraph and in the entire paper.
Evidence and support from at least SIX credible sources.
MLA Project Expansion: Include analysis of another primary source (TV show, film, literary work, etc.) in addition to your original primary source, include two secondary sources (scholarly, academic publications) that discuss the social issue or norm analyzed in your paper and two more sources of your choice. (These last two may be formal or informal- news, entertainment, etc.)
APA Project Expansion: Include at least three more scholarly sources that help you explore your topic more fully. Focus on finding sources that rely on empirical data, such as peer reviewed studies, facts, statistics, and proven data to help support your position on the subject.
A concluding paragraph that effectively wraps up the discussion and illuminates the significance of the paper’s focus without simply restating the ideas in your paper.
Well-written sentences that follow grammar and mechanics of Standard written English and demonstrate effective word choice and varied structure.
Formatting and documentation that follows appropriate guidelines (MLA or APA) for that discipline.
