For this week’s essay you are to interview 2 family members and 1 friend and ask them the following questions; 1. Discuss how many races do they think exist in the world? 2. Do they believe any one race is superior to another? Then, using the book and the Powerpoint, 3. explain to them the how scientists do not believe that race is a biological concept and the idea of the Social Construction of Race (that race is not “real” and that race is constructed differently depending on the society and the era in that society). What do they think about what you taught them? Your essay should include answers to question 1 and 2, a detailed and sourced summary of the information that you provided to them, and a detailed account of the conversation that you had with them about what you taught them. I must see evidence that you understand this concept that you are teaching them in your essay. It is best if you interview your subjects separately and you can do so over the phone, zoom or in person. However, If you must interview them together, you will not lose points for this essay.
I consider this assignment so essential that I require some form of it for every class that I teach. For those of you who have taken a class with me before or who are taking 2 classes with me right now, you should make sure that you do this assignment again but interview and educate 3 different people than you did (or will) for the other class with me.
Your essay is to be written in sentence and paragraph form and should be 3 pages, double spaced, typed in 12 font, with one inch margins. I understand that this is a touchy subject and you may get some controversial answers from the people you interview and/or they may disagree with your view or what you teach them; that is fine. Please write honestly about what they say and know that you are not graded on what they say, rather, you are graded on whether you follow the directions for this assignment
