The Carlyle Group is a private equity firm based in Washington, DC. It carries out what are called “leveraged buyouts” – it accepts money from investors and in turn uses that money to buy domestic and foreign companies, particularly in the areas of defense, aerospace, and regulated industries like telecommunications. Carlyle provides an interesting example of the “iron triangle” that you learned about from your textbook in chapter six. This firm is very skilled at bringing together government officials and former officials, members of congressional committees, and other interested parties to lobby for its own interests. As with everything in politics, there is an upside and a downside to this. Your assignment is as follows:

1.Explain how the information in the article fit with the information from the textbook? In other words, how does Carlyle go about influencing public policy in the US and abroad?
2. What is a leveraged buyout? How is such activity beneficial? How is it harmful?
3. Beyond its activities in China, how does Carlyle influence what happens in Washington, DC and elsewhere in the United States? Do you consider such activities to be a positive or a negative influence on public policy?
