HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO: (1) Select a well-known and/or canonical writer (the syllabus book list is a good place to look).
The writer shouldn’t necessarily be someone you read in high school. WHY? (Click on the link); (2) Review or examine a
few short stories or a novel or two by the writer of your choice; (3) Study and focus on the writer’s WRITING STYLE; (4)
Now, imagine the following hypothetical scenario: While studying in a library one day you make a startling discovery!
[Similar to HERE]. You discover a hitherto unknown and undiscovered story written by the writer you selected-BUT the
story is unknown and has been undiscovered because it was written under a pseudonym, not the writer’s actual name.
We don’t know why the writer decided to write under a pseudonym, but they did. [See pp. 259 – 262 in Habits]. The
point is: although the writer wrote the undiscovered story under a pseudonym, you discovered the actual identity of the
writer from their writing style; (5) You will write a story in the same or similar writing style as the pseudonymous writer,
the writer you selected; that is, you will imitate or emulate the writer’s writing style; (6) The principal characters or
protagonist in the story can be entirely made up OR you can borrow a character from your favorite fandom. WHAT IS A
FANDOM? Examples: fun fandom books: HERE and HERE]
In this assignment, you’ll have a lot of creative freedom. If you wish, the principal characters or protagonist in your story
can be selected from your favorite fandom. That is, you can select a character from your favorite fandom-but
remember, the story must be written in the style of your selected (pseudonymous) writer.
What’s your favorite fandom? A book, novel, movie, video game, TV show, Netflix or Hulu show, YouTube channel,
sports team, whatever…. the example above mashes up the fandom of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with the
popularity of zombies. Basically, it’s the characters of Pride and Prejudice + the world of The Walking Dead.
You can select a character from Hogwarts or the bridge of the Enterprise. You can have the characters chased by
zombies or the alien monster from the Alien movies. In other words, you can select a character from the world of your
own preferred fandom–whatever that may be. It could be Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Trek,
Star Wars, your favorite video game, or favorite movie. The important thing is this: you’re a fan of whatever it is, and
you know that world rather well. Whatever that fandom is, it’s totally YOU.
If you select a character(s) from a fandom, please be mindful about whether or how (if you decide to do so) we change
the historical representation of the character(s). Such as The Hulk becoming Nerd Hulk. Or Thor becoming Lebowski
Thor. (Yes, I’m referencing the last Avengers movie). We now have a Black Captain America. Much has been made of
Wonder Woman as LGBTQ+. Batman and Robin from the Batman series were always potentially in-the-closet, In this assignment, you’ll have a lot of creative freedom. If you wish, the principal characters or protagonist in your story

character (or not) or we can also write a parody as long as we’re respectful and sensitive to relevant issues,
With your story, you’ll have a multitude of imaginative options–wherever your mind takes you. In the spirit of Habits
Chapter 12, p. 245, play with the story. Play with language. Play with ideas. And most importantly, play with sentences
and your words. Use a dictionary and a thesaurus (not online apps). Please make your story inventive and playful. It’s a
fun mash-up. If you’re confused, look again at the links above. Or ask a classmate. Or ask the instructor.
This Project has TWO parts: (i) Creative Component: You’ll write a fanfiction story of AT LEAST 5-10 pages (you can go

Briefly, explain the research you performed on the writer and their style; (2) Explain how you imitated a writer’s style.

your story in terms of the creative decisions you made: on STYLE. You’ll need a 5-10 pages minimum fanfiction story and
1-2 pages that critically analyzes the story. *In this specific assignment, you’ll submit an initial draft of the story.
