Guidelines
Choose an artwork to analyze from https://www.tate.org.uk/art (Links to an external site.) that is 2-dimensional and representational (or only slightly abstract). Do not choose an artwork previously talked about in Unit 1 lecture or from our textbook readings.
Download or screenshot the image to copy into your word document. State the image’s title, artist’s name, date created, and medium. Spend time researching your artist, artwork, and time period created. (If you are struggling to find information, choose a different work.)
Write on the following:
Complete a formal analysis of your artwork.
Choose a minimum of 2 elements and 2 principles to focus on. Be specific and talk about how these fundamental terms create understanding. Use lecture terminology and sub-terminology of these elements and principles to explain your analysis.
Then, choose one of the following to complete:
Stylistic analysis: focus on comparing your artwork to others done by your artist AND other artists/styles being used during the same time period of creation. You will need to do research.
Iconographic analysis: choose a minimum of 3 symbols to focus on. Explain how those symbols draw meaning and do research into their representation. Be specific in what they represent. Be honest when some assumption is required.
Finally, choose one of the following to complete:
Contextual analysis: focus on religious, historical, or biographic context to help explain why the artwork was created. You will need to do research.
Psychological analysis: connect the artists psychological state to what is physically present in the work. You will need to do research. (If you can’t find information about their psychological state, do not choose this bullet.)
When researching your artist/artwork, please use academic sources. Museum websites are great places to start. You can also use our library databases: https://www.bhc.edu/academics/academic-resources/library/Links to an external site. Be sure to cite all sources used to research.
