you will identify a behavioral health disorder. Among other conditions, behavioral health disorders include social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, major depression, bipolar depression or any substance abuse problem (including smoking). You will then propose an experimental study to examine an intervention to treat the disorder. To effectively accomplish this, you will conduct an extensive literature review in which you construct a model identifying a risk factor and a mechanism that leads to the disorder of interest. You will begin by explaining the public health significance of the disorder you have selected; in other words, you will outline the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of the disorder. You will also select a specific risk factor or risk group for your study. As a final step in constructing your model, you will identify a specific mechanism that triggers or maintains the disorder. The mechanism and the symptoms of the disorder will be the targets of the intervention you will propose. Once you have done this, you will provide justification for comparing an experimental treatment to a control treatment for the disorder.
You will design a study following guidelines set forth in the textbook chapters and handouts. For this paper, you will learn how to use search databases to find relevant empirical articles that will help you support your claims. You will also be tasked with incorporating operational definitions that explicitly explain how you are defining key terms and concepts. With regard to your writing, you will become intimately familiar with APA style.
