Make sure your final essay meets the following requirements:
Format/Technical:
All essays must be typed, at least 2000 words (eight pages; do not include the endnotes
and bibliography in the word count) in length, double-spaced, 12-point font, and 1” inch
margins.
Do Not include a title page.
Your name and section number should appear in the upper left-hand header.
Choose an appropriate title, type it on the first line of text (centered), skip two lines, and
then begin your essay immediately after.
Do not use long, unanalyzed quotations to fill up space! These will be penalized.
Be sure you are properly citing (footnoting) the sources you use in your paper.
o Plagiarisms of any sort will be dealt with harshly.
Your endnotes and bibliography will appear on separate pages at the end of your paper.
o Book, journal, and newspaper titles are ITALIZIED wherever they are used, even
in the body of the paper.
All essays should be thoroughly proofread; essays with typographical, punctuation, and
capitalization errors will result in lower scores.
o Review the handouts I posted about Confusing Words, Transitions, and Other
Tips.
o In addition, review the link I posted concerning Capitalization Rules.
It is highly recommended that you use an outside proofreader or the Writing Center to
reduce the number of sentence structure and grammatical errors.
Structure:
Make sure your introduction clearly presents your contemporary issue (using a “hook” to grab
your reader’s attention would be highly recommended and appropriate) and your central
points (thesis/argument).
The body of your paper should clearly identify the historical roots of your contemporary issue
through time and across space (geographically). The body of your paper may work either
backwards or forwards in historical time. You might find it necessary to employ other
organizational forms, such as geography or sub-topics. Whatever you choose, make sure that
your narrative flows.
Remember to provide a conclusion that brings all the various parts of your essay together,
especially addressing the question of how an understanding of the past is important to
understanding your issue in the present.
