Submit one page of writing for ONE of the following two options:
“Geology in the news”: Find an article that talks about a geologic feature/process that is relevant to your hometown/home region. Write a summary of the article and relate it to any concepts discussed in ESS101. Also discuss some of the greater societal implications of the feature/process—how does this impact people in your hometown? Please also submit a PDF or a screenshot and link of the original article.
“Geology in your backyard”: Go out and find a natural feature near where you are – maybe it’s as big as Mt Rainier, or maybe as small as erosion features in the sediment in the gutter next to your apartment. Take a photo and write a couple paragraphs about 1) what it is, 2) how it relates to earth science and concepts from class, 3) what caused it. Please include an image of your feature of interest.
For example: after the large storm this weekend, as I was walking through the park there were deep rivulets in the path that had exposed the gravel but swept away all the fines. I could then take photos, talk about how this demonstrates erosive processes on a small scale that operate on much larger scales as well, talk about how the water preferentially removed the finer particles because it takes less energy to move those, and maybe include a picture from a desert wash or something where the same process can be seen in large scale.
