What types of ecosystems surround your home and what services do they provide? Consider urban, agricultural and aquatic ecosystems as well as any “natural” terrestrial ecosystems. How would insecticides affect these ecosystem services?
Consider the following when answering your question:
Obtain a GIS or Landsat map for your county or region (Access to, and Instructions for Landsat viewer can be found by Clicking Here). What proportion of the area is natural or developed? What proportion is forest, cropland, park, stream, lake, reservoir, wilderness, paved, or urban? What ecosystem services do you derive from each of these ecosystem types? What plant, animal and microbial species control the delivery of these services? Which species would be affected by insecticide runoff or by feeding on insecticide-contaminated food? How would reduction in these species affect delivery of ecosystem services?
Estimate percentages of the area that are forest, cropland, park, stream, lake, reservoir, wilderness, paved, or urban. A simple way of doing this is to cut a square inch template, move the template over each category to estimate how many square inches per total square inches of screen are in each category.
