The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey are both concerned with the themes of human frailty, growing older, and accepting one’s mortality. Earlier this term, you wrote a journal response to the following prompt:
PROMPT: What lessons does The Epic of Gilgamesh teach us about human frailty and mortality? Why do you think that one of the most ancient texts that we know of focuses specifically on mortality and loss? What can we learn about fear and our responses to it through this story? What can this text teach us about fear and our responses to it in our present situation?
For this section, you will write an essay in which you discuss these issues as they relate to both The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey. You are welcome to use as much as Journal #1 as you’d like, but you will need to revise the thesis statement to reflect the presence of a new text. In other words, you should not simply add on a few paragraphs that address The Odyssey. Your essay should present a balanced comparison/contrast of the texts. In other words, you should discuss The Odyssey in about as many words as you discussed The Epic of Gilgamesh.
Your essay should be:
Formally written. Please do not use 1st person;
Logically organized, with distinct introductory, multiple body, and concluding paragraphs. Transitional words and phrases should be used to make connections among claims and texts and to provide a reasonable sense of cohesion;
Feature a clear thesis statement that is sufficiently debatable;
Provide support for claims. Use quotes from the texts. Please do not use lengthy block quotes in this paper
Be at least 1000 words long;
Be formatted using correct MLA style guidelines
