Question 2 – Issues in Development
The second question leaves room for your own interest, and aims at formulating the main ideas discussed in one of the guest lectures by dr. David Sogge or dr. Maggi Cheung. Choose one of the current issues in development listed below to discuss in terms of the frameworks and concepts we have addressed in class or in the course literature. Develop a question regarding the issue area, select a framework, clarify your argument, and write a complete essay. The essay should include the following points:
• Describe what is important about the issue below and what you would like to know about it.
• Choose a theoretical approach (e.g. neoliberalism, human development, post development) and use key concepts we have used in class or in the readings which can be useful to understand the issues better. Adequately describe the approach and analyze the issue with the selected framework.
• How does the approach you are using help you to understand the topic? What aspects become most visible? What is important based on your chosen framework? What does this framework leave out? Issues:
o Migration and development
o Aid architecture and/or private sector involvement
General Information and Exam Instructions:.
This final exam is meant to show us what you know of the theories and approaches, but also that
you can reflect on the topics. We encourage a balance between including facts and theories and
your own reflections on them.
For each question, you must write an essay of 1250 words (+/- 10%). Add a word count and the end
of each essay.
Please observe the following style specification: Calibri, font 11, 1.5 line spacing.
Questions may be answered in English or Dutch, but if it is in Dutch be sure that everything is in
Dutch. Only ‘core concepts’ that are difficult to translate can be used in English in a Dutch text.
This is an individual exam. Do not work with others, or share your work with others.
Show your knowledge and comprehension of the literature and the lectures. Develop your
argument as completely as possible, linking up the different articles and lectures. Make sure that your arguments are clear, and that each essay has a logical progression of ideas. Avoid simple summaries of the literature, and use the appropriate concepts instead of broad descriptions.
The essay will be assessed on the following criteria: understanding of literature, argumentation, academic writing, sources and referencing and originality.
The references in the text DO count in your word count. Also include a reference list at the end of each question – this part should NOT be included in the word count for your answers. Points will be lost if your paper uses references incorrectly. Preferably use APA referencing (see https://www.mendeley.com/guides/apa-citation-guide ) and avoid the use of footnotes.
Please submit your essays electronically to the course Canvas, under “Assignments” and then “Final Exam” on December 15 (17.00h) as latest. The deadline cannot be negotiated. For each 24 hours that the exam is late, you will lose 0.5 points.
After the exams have been returned, we will arrange times that you review your exam, or you can make an individual appointment with us.
Exam Questions
Please use at least Seven sources for each essay, and make sure that you reference them at the end. This
includes book chapters, articles, lectures, and discussion notes.
