Art 103 Final Essays

December 15 by midnight.
Pick ONE essay questions to complete, Answers should be at
least 800 to about 100 words each. (They can be longer) The answers should be word-processed and
printed out, double-spaced and spell-checked.
Images of the artwork that you are discussing should be included in each
essay. These images must be of artwork
that is from the textbook and lectures
only.

You should only use your textbook and the lectures for the
information. **You are not allowed to
use the general internet! ! If you use any written materials from the internet,
it is grounds for an” “F for that exam essay and potentially for the entire
exam.

The questions are written so that you will have to pull
information from several chapters of the textbook for each one. Information can come potentially from any
chapter in the book. Please list the citations.
Be sure to include pictures of the images that you are discussing. (You
are allowed to use the internet to find the art images that you need.)

You should be getting the information from your textbook and
the lectures for each question and then making comparisons and drawing
conclusions to answer the question. You
are to use four examples of specific artworks that you refer to by name and
artist or culture, for each question.
Some specific artworks are listed, others are your choice, but you must
discuss four minimum.

Compare and contrast
artists’ attitudes about technology, as shown in the artworks of the Italian
Futurists, Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik and Tony Oursler. Be sure to describe
a specific artwork for each artist or group, and compare and contrast all the artworks
for a total of 4 artworks minimum. Points to cover for each artwork.

2. Contemporary artists often look to other art forms or back
to explore or comment on masterpieces from the past by reworking or appropriating
them. Discuss this Appropriation by
modern individual artists. Use at least
four specific artworks as examples, starting with Francis Bacon and culminating
in Post-Modernism with the work of Cindy Sherman, Sherrie Levine and Yasumasa
Morimura for a total of 4 artworks
minimum. Be sure to compare and contrast
the artworks after describing them. Name the original artist and show the artwork
that they copied from and the dates. Points to cover:

c. Is there a
change in materials or media?
d. What
aspects of the masterwork remain intact?
e. What
aspects are modified or added by the contemporary artist?
f. How do these modifications rework
the masterpiece to change its meaning?

3. Ideas about Sculpture have changed to encompass movement.
These kinetic sculptures have elements that can be moved by human interaction,
natural forces or mechanically/electronically. Start with a kinetic artwork by Laszlo
Moholy-Nagy and include a specific kinetic artwork by Alexander Calder, Jean Tinguely, and finish with a video work
by Nam June Paik for a total of 4
artworks minimum . Be sure to compare and contrast the artworks after
describing them visually.

4 . Happenings are often seen as the precursors of
Performance Art. Discuss the progression
and development of Performance Art using specific happenings or performances by
the following artists: Allan Kaprow, Fluxus, Joseph Beuys and Laurie Anderson. for a total
of 4 “performances” minimum. Be sure to
compare and contrast the performance after describing them. Points to cover:
