1. Explain your understanding of the topic, including your understanding of the salient issues, facts, principles, and values involved. (3 paragraphs, minimum). This explanation should make clear what the issue is, why it is controversial, why it matters, specifically why it matters morally, and what facts, principles, and values are pertinent to the topic.
2. Develop at least 3 arguments in favor of the topic claim and 3 arguments against the topic claim. (6 paragraphs, minimum)
a) A developed argument is, at minimum, equivalent to a lengthy paragraph.
3. Weigh the favoring and disfavoring arguments against each other. (2 paragraphs, minimum)
4. State and explain the views found in 3 articles or book chapters (or similar) that address your topic. (3 paragraphs, minimum)
a) Make sure to include appropriate information in a Bibliography page
b) These views must be independent of arguments advanced in fulfillment of requirement 2, but may be convergent with those arguments. In short, either the topics introduced by the research must be new or the perspectives on topics already discussed must be new.
5. Establish a clear conclusion and make the reasoning for that conclusion clear and as persuasive as possible. (2 paragraphs, minimum)
You need not agree with the topic; your paper may vehemently disagree with the topic statement.
In this essay, in addition to satisfying the 5 requirements above, you must:
1. clearly identify your thesis
2. support your thesis with relevant arguments and evidence
3. avoid unwarranted generalizations
4. identify and respond to potential counter-arguments
5. cite sources appropriately
