A comparison needs to be drawn from Nazi Germany to the book the Handmaids Tale. There is a movie called
Son of Saul that depicts the story of a Sonderkommando within Auschwitz. If you cannot find ties between this movie
and the book do research about Nazi Germany and explain how elements of that regime are related with the Handmaids Tale.
Focus on the layout of how Offred depicts certain scenes of her surroundings with the parallel of how Son of Saul lays out the scenes. What is the turmoil both are suffering and how is depicted similar?
Similar to how Offred risked everything in order to be with Nick, Saul risked everything to properly bury his boy. They were both controlled because they had love for something despite the environment around them being so bleak.
Compare the scenes where Saul encounters his wife and when Offred encounters Nick as communication through non verbal communication.
Chapter 41 (Collaborator ), Pg 216 Chapter 42. The particicution and the salvaging was in place to make the people of Gilead collaborators with their government.
The holding of the rope and it being covered with tar is a ploy by Gilead to make the Handmaid’s feel more responsible for their actions.
Just as when Saul led his fellow Jews and prisoners into the delousing and undressing portion of the gas chamber saying they would be able to return to their belongings shortly after their “shower”.
Both Saul and Offred were products of their environment by serving and breaking their own morality for the people that keep them imprisoned.
What is at stake today for me? In my world today, how do Offred and Saul’s story overlap with mine. How am I a collaborator in the society I live in?
