Explain the rise of American slavery in the colonial era, its antebellum expansion, and its destruction during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Students will answer one prompt with a four-page essay. The best essays will address multiple causes and effects and not belabor a single point. Be as specific with your answers as you can be. Students must cite at least seven course materials (textbook, course pack, etcetera) in their answers. In-text citation is acceptable; you do not need to use footnotes. Grammar and spelling will be considered in grading.
