(1) Use perception checking correctly on at least one occasion with someone you have an interpersonal relationship with. Your interaction must be face-to-face communication — NO telephone (voice or text) or Internet (e-mail, web chat, messenger, etc.) conversations.

PERCEPTION CHECKING PROCESS

1. Describe the person’s behavior to him (what he said or did) in very specific detail.

NOTE: DO NOT EVALUATE THE BEHAVIOR.

2. Offer 2 reasonable interpretations of the person’s behavior.

3. Ask the person for feedback on how to interpret his behavior.

HINT: Use these steps in the correct order. Use a nonthreatening voice and appropriate eye contact. Avoid sarcasm or “double messages.”

(2) Write a 3-page paper describing your experience. Use the “Perception Checking Paper” grading criteria (rubric) to help you structure your paper correctly.
