What might future generations learn from the photo?

Since the development of photography, there have been particular photographs that have become iconic, and part of the visual cultural zeitgeist. Keep in mind that while photography can be considered an art form, it is also a tool for graphic communication. The photograph is a still image, a record of something; a moment in time, an event, a person, etc. The act of communicating that something (through the still image… through photography) has its own unique importance, and can often eclipse the value of the “something” that was photographed. In fact without the photographic record, that “something” may never have been made known to the greater public, may never have influenced culture. Photos can be historically significant because of that act of communication. Think about a culturally significant photo, not a photo of something culturally or historically significant. There is a difference.
Your essay could say things like: “this photo is important because… it made people think about something in a new way, it showed people something new, it caused people to think, to act, to fight, to help, to rebel, to protest, to explore, to dream. This photo showed people something they never would have seen, and thus believed, without this particular photo”
Keep in mind that “photograph” and “picture” are words often used interchangeably but are not necessarily the same thing. You are to choose a significant photograph (an image taken with the use of a camera) and not an illustration, drawing, cartoon, painting, etching, etc.
Answer these questions:
What does the photo show us? Not simply what is in the image, but what does it reveal to us about life, about culture, about our world, about humanity, about ourselves?
What ideas or feelings do you get from the photo?
What can we learn from the photo? What might future generations learn from the photo?
Make sure to include all pertinent information regarding who took the photo and when, if known.
