3- During the semester, we spent the several weeks exploring different sociological theories to understand why people decide to engage in criminal activities and/or deviant behaviors. We basically covered four main sociological approaches: Symbolic Interactionism, Functionalism, Rational Choice Theory, and Conflict Theory. After reading the article attached (Jayson Blair Plagiarism), answer the following question
a. Why did he do it? To answer this inquiry, you need to choose two of the theories covering in class that explain why Jayson Blair decided to fabricate and plagiarize a large portion of his work. (30 points)
Tips.
Tip 1: Make sure to provide the necessary theoretical background when pertinent. (i.e., definition of concepts).
Tip 2: It is critical you connect theory and case study. Do NOT summarize the readings/video and then provide a summary of the theory. You must add value to your work. To do so, you must integrate case, theory, and analysis into a single narrative.
Tip 3: I would recommend you select three or four examples from the readings and videos that in your opinion can be analyzed with the theory you chose to use. For instance, you could say that the dialogue “z” between character “a” and “b” is an example of how power is unequally distributed in society. If you make such a claim, I expect you to define/discuss the idea of power. Then, I want to know how the scene illustrates/supports your claim.
Tip 4: If the theory only partially explains the case, make sure to tell your readers. This is absolutely fine. Theories will never explain all aspects of the social world. Thus, do not force the case to fit the theory. Just acknowledge the limits of the theory.
Tip 5: The most important element of these questions is to draw connections between the case and the theory. These are analytical questions.
Tip 6: Finally, you can borrow concepts of other theories.
