In this section you will be asked to analyze a sequence from the film The Scarlett Empress, for which the link and time code are provided below. The analysis will be written essay style in approximately 500 words, (approx. 2 pages double-spaced).
The analysis should begin with a brief description of the sequence you are analyzing. You should also include a thesis statement that answers the question below (but in essay form, not question and answer form). As well, the body of the essay should address the elements listed below.
These elements should be incorporated into the analysis, and written in your own words, rather than as specific answers or responses to what is written below. (In other words don’t explicitly formulate your response in question and answer form, and don’t divide your paper into these same sections, or use these same headings as literal subtitles within your paper. They are here only as reminders of what you need to include in your analysis.)
Include in your Analysis:
1. Description of the Sequence
Include a short paragraph that describes what’s happening in the sequence.
2. Thesis statement
Why is the sequence organized and filmed in this manner?
3. Body of the Essay (address these elements)
Consider the key techniques of film style (e.g., mise-en-scène, lighting, framing, camera movement, sound, etc.) that you think are important to the sequence, in terms of its aesthetic presentation or style, and its meaning. (Do not attempt to include every single detail or moment – focus on those that are important aesthetically and thematically.)
How does the cinematic form of the sequence, help to construct its meaning, evoke emotion, and define characters and their relationships?
How does the sequence relate thematically and narratively to the film as a whole?
