The Great Gatsby Essay Assignment
Your task is to contemplate, plan and write an essay on one of the following topics. You are required to provide evidence from the text and use at least ONE outside/ secondary source that supports your analysis or a point(s) you will be analyzing.
Essay Topics:
Symbols play an important role in the progression of multiple themes in the novel. Choose one theme and examine how one symbol or multiple symbols demonstrate theme and significance to the reader.
Note on Secondary Sources:
Secondary sources are necessary for supporting either your analysis or your main points. These sources are important because they make your arguments and analysis substantially more valid and relevant. These supporting ideas are similar to ‘expert testimony’ from literary critics. When searching for a secondary source it can be supportive of your point/ analysis directly OR indirectly. It can be about Gatsby or another work of literature that shares ideas, concepts or themes with Gatsby.
When looking for secondary sources, use PEER REVIEWED sources that have been published by reputable sources. Do not use sites that do not have authors associated with the evidence, summary sites, other students, or common knowledge.
Essay Formatting:
The essay MUST be in MLA format:
complete with parenthetical citations from the primary source and any secondary sources you choose.
a Works Cited page also in MLA format. There will be a minimum of 2 entries.

Size 11 or 12 font
1250 words
All essays will be submitted to an authenticity check website that will detect plagiarism.
