ESSAY 1 INSTRUCTIONS
Read the article Shiny, Happy People? by Yuval Noah Harari, the author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. In this article, Harari makes an argument about happiness in human history.
Once you have read the article and identified his main argument, it’s time for you to start analyzing his argument. Though Harari’s article covers all of human history, your essay will be limited to the time periods covered in Chapters 1, 2, and 3 (it’s fine to refer to the present day in your introduction and conclusion but your thesis must focus on the Module 1 time period). You can mention other hominids besides Homo sapiens but your thesis should focus on Homo sapiens. Your essay should address this question:
From the beginning of human society (hunter-gatherers) through the agricultural revolution and the rise of the first civilizations, did the quality of life get better or worse for humanity?
To answer this question, you must cite specific information from the textbook and “Shiny, Happy People?” There is no right or wrong answer to this question. The key is to make a clear argument and support your argument with evidence from the textbook and article. Remember that this is your chance to show me what you have learned, so do not skimp on examples from the textbook.
