write this post in a professional manner, editing and proofing your work for grammar and spelling. This response should be about 500 words (for prompt #1 and 2 combined) and directly refer to the readings “Speech Sounds” and Chapter 5.
Prompt #1: In chapter 5, how does Eddah Mutua’s personal narrative explore how the condition of postcoloniality informs her intercultural encounters in three different countries? Giving specific examples, explain how her critical interrogative positionally of “insider-outsider” helps her navigate across, and connect with, various issues underscored by histories of colonialism in one of the three countries.
Prompt #2: Celebrated Science Fiction author, Octavia Butler’s short story “Speech Sounds,” gives us a fictional opportunity to engage with the complexity and difficulty with “intercultural encounter.” She describes a society that is profoundly broken down. All known forms of communication as well as historical knowledge anchoring a community together has dissolved. First, read Michelle Chikaonda’s thoughtful engagement with “Speech Sounds” (link below). Second, discuss the symbolism of the public bus as a place of intercultural encounter as presented by Butler. Finally, choose one theme Butler paints in the story and connect it to a concept or theme related to intercultural communication covered in the chapters thus far. Posts should offer specific examples from “Speech Sounds” and the readings to illustrate their point.
DISCUSSION 2:
Please write your post in a professional and thoughtful manner. Edit your work for spelling and grammar. Please offer a brief comment to a peer’s post explaining what you learned from them.
In 150 words, respond to the prompt below.
Prompt: Chapter 7 reading is concerned with how to have spaces “be experienced, distributed, and negotiated more equitably.” One such way that people have “claimed space” is through “communicative practices.” First, in your own words explain what the author means when he claims that spaces are defined through human interaction and communicative practices. Give specific evidence from the reading. Second, drawing from your own knowledge, give an example of a space that you are aware of that has been culturally transformed in small or large ways. An example I’ve offered is Chicano Park in San Diego (see the documentary and article about this amazing space). Feel free to refer to Chicano Park or any other space with which you are familiar.
