Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss and
explain a significant theological theme from 1 Peter which contributes to a
better understanding of Christology and practical ministry.

Directions:
After praying and asking God for wisdom, choose a theme from 1 Peter that interests
you. Here are some suggestions:

Holiness

Up
to this point in the course, you have already completed the basic steps for discussing
a theological theme from 1 Peter. You have read 1 Peter and the assigned
chapters from the textbook (Jobes) and have outlined and summarized the letter
while asking relevant questions about the letter (i.e., arrangement, background
information, etc.). You are in a good
position now to begin gathering specific information for your paper.

Below
are several recommended steps:

1.
After picking one of the themes from 1 Peter,
decide what the verses/passages in 1 Peter directly or indirectly discuss this
theme.
2.
Explain Peter’s intended meaning to his original
audience concerning these passages (include relevant contextual information
from Commentaries, Bible Dictionaries, Lexicons, etc.).
3.
Determine Peter’s overall thematic significance of this theme [What point(s) is Peter
making that he wants his readers to get concerning this theme?]
4.
Answer the question, “What understanding does
Peter uniquely contribute to this theme—particularly in relation to
Christology?”
5.
Be aware of the content of Peter’s instruction about
this theme that is similar to or confirms other New Testament instruction on
this topic?
6.
Describe how Peter’s emphasis of this theme
better prepares you for ministry?

When
you have completed the above steps you are ready to organize and write your
paper.

Grading
Criteria

Content
(50%) – degree to which the paper adequately explains a theological theme in 1
Peter, particularly in relation to Christology, incorporating scholarly
research.
Analysis
(20%) – degree to which the paper assesses the theological contribution of this
theme from 1 Peter and makes an appropriate application of its relevance to
ministry.
Grammar
and style (20%) – degree to which the paper is free of errors, well organized,
written with cohesive paragraphs, appropriate for the university level.
Formatting
(10%) – degree to which the paper follows the conventions for citing sources
(Turabian style unless student receives approval to use APA).
