What are the he Challenge of Global Literature. The Challenge of Global Literature
In class, we have considered the question of reading in translation, what translation is and does and, notably, what it cannot do. Given that this class is a global literature course, and one that is only three weeks long, what are the limitations of and opportunities within thinking about global literatures?
In a 2-3 page response to our discussion, to Moretti and to Broulette, where do you see literature fitting into our discussion of global realities, both historical and current? What is the value of global literatures as the writers we have read, and you yourself, define them? What are potential limitations in our assumptions that there is a “global literature”? How do we deal with those limitations as we proceed in a course like ours?

This will be due on January 5th (Wednesday) by class time.

Columbus, the Americas, Guaman Poma de Ayala
Now that we have had a chance to look at the language that is used in Columbus’s journal, in Lope de Vega’s play about Columbus and ‘discovery’, Guaman Poma de Ayala’s Nueva Coronica, and Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui’s commentary on the latter, please write a 1-2 page reflection on the language of colonization and attempts at decolonization in language.
You may want to discuss:
1) Rivera Cusicanqui’s interpretation of Guaman Poma de Ayala’s work. How does visual language work in the Nueva Coronica according to Rivera Cusicanqui and does it hold possibilities for 21st century attempts at thinking decolonization as a broader concept?
2) Columbus’s journal, Lope de Vega’s play, and other texts including Bartholome de las Casas’s history of the indies and Oviedo’s history of the Indies (linked to on our class page) express ideas about providence (God’s supposed plan) in very different ways. Draw comparisons/contrasts between these texts where you see them.
3) Columbus writes at length about the status of the indigenous folks he encountered as being inherently enslavable (which he proceeded to do!) How do you see the language of justification working in the text?
4) Given that (even if he didn’t know it) Columbus was chronicling the first encounters between Europeans and the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, how do you think the language of Columbus’s text ended up coloring later understandings of the “New World”?
5) How does Rivera Cusicanqui suggest the language of the colonizers works and how does Guman Poma de Ayala’s work subvert that?
This assignment is due January 6th by class time.
