Policy manuals provide reference and guidance to educators about different decisions and actions that apply in a school district. School boards determine the policies and procedures, and administrators execute and enforce those policies and procedures.
Assume you have been asked to serve on the Ethics Committee at your school district. The committee chair has asked you to review existing policies concerning legal and ethical behavior in schools. The purpose of this policy review is two-fold. First, there have been some issues at several schools, and the district wants to send a message that reiterates relevant policies. Second, the committee has tasked itself with identifying potentially outdated policies and getting them updated.
Locate the district policy manual for your local school district.
Note: This is not a school handbook, a teacher handbook, or a master agreement. The policies will be located on your school district website (not an individual school website), in the School Board tab or section.
Write an 875- to 1050-word analysis following these instructions:
Section 1: Select 2 policies that are contained in the student section and discuss why these policies are important from an ethical and/or legal standpoint. Provide specific examples or a rationale to support your choices.
Section 2: Select 2 policies that are contained in the staff or personnel section and discuss why these policies are important from an ethical and/or legal standpoint. Provide specific examples or a rationale to support your choices.
Section 3: Select 2 policies regarding the use of technology by students and teachers and discuss why these policies are important from an ethical and/or legal standpoint. Determine whether these policies are still up to date. If not, make recommendations for updating them. Provide specific examples or a rationale to support your choices.
For each policy, you selected, reflect on the year it was written and any federal or state laws that are referenced or connected to the policy. This should be included in the three discussions above. You can locate the year the policy was written as well as any referenced laws either at the beginning or at the end of the policies.
Section 4: Reflect on and explain how these policies relate to the development of your own code of ethics associated with the education profession.
Include a title page, introduction, conclusion, and reference page that includes the reference and link to the district policies manual.
Format your assignment according to APA guidelines. Your paper should have an introduction, four sections ( with possible subsections), and a conclusion. Please refer to the Sample APA paper found in the library for the formatting of headings and subheadings.
Cite your sources in APA format.
