Throughout the semester you’ve read, listened, thought, and written about various aspects of public policy and planning. Your second assignment asks that you combine all that you’ve learned in response to watching this documentary available to watch for free here:
https://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000007959477/takeover.html?searchResultPosition=1
“On July 14th, 1970, members of the Young Lords took over Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx.”
After watching the documentary, your assignment is to analyze this as a policy analyst and planner would. Use the steps of policy analysis to organize an essay in the following way:
Introduction: what was the Young Lords? where did they operate and who were its members?
Step A: what were the social values espoused by the Young Lords?
Step B: what was the public problem(s) that the Young Lords identified in the Bronx? how did the Young Lords explain this problem?
Step C: what were 2 or 3 policy alternatives that the Young Lords favored?
Step D: estimate what you believe would be the primary costs and benefits of at least one of the policy alternatives?
Step E: what would it take to implement this policy alternative? who had the authority to do this?
Conclusion: Based on your analysis in Steps A-E, evaluate the policy success of the Young Lords 40 years later in 2021. Use data and statistics (bonus points if you create an original table or graph) to analyze the policy outcomes that mattered to the Young Lords today.
